Flight Cancellation at Delta Airlines: 24-Hour Policy

It may happen that we have to change our travel plans, including our plane tickets. While it’s easy to change tickets purchased directly from Delta Air Lines, things can get tricky when it comes to changing tickets issued by third parties.

Before we dive into third-party post edits, let’s first define what they are. A third-party ticket is an airline ticket that you purchase from a seller other than the airline. These can be travel agencies, hotels, vacation packages and other websites specializing in the sale of airline tickets.

Moving on to the change: the first thing to do is to contact the seller from whom you purchased the ticket. It will let you know if the ticket can be changed and what the associated fees are. In some cases, they can even take care of the entire editing process for you.

In other cases, the seller may direct you to DAL Customer Service to arrange the change. In this case, you will need to provide the airline with your booking reference number, and they will work with the seller to make the necessary changes.

No change/modification fees are applied in the following cases:

  • Ticket booked by a third party but issued by Delta Air Lines.
  • Change for flight cancellation or delay caused by DAL
  • Ticket booked by military or government person
  • Change requested after upgrade with SkyMiles points.
  • Modification of a flight within 24 hours prior to the flight (same day).

In other cases, a $50 fee is generally applied and billed by the airline.
