Traveling with oversized luggage can be a challenge, especially when it comes to flying with a low cost airline like Allegiant Air. Luckily, there are a few options available for those who need to carry oversized items aboard US airline aircraft.
Each passenger preparing to fly with Allegiant Air must verify that their baggage complies with the allowance allowed by their air carrier, which applies strict restrictions on the number and weight of baggage carried on board their flights, in the cabin and in the hold.
No matter which route you have booked with Allegiant Air, you can take one item of hand luggage with you, which is usually already included in the ticket price. Checked baggage is handed over at check-in and is transported in the hold. Both have different height and weight limits, and each additional kilogram has to be paid for.
Special or oversized baggage
Please inform the airline in advance of any type of oversized or special baggage such as sports equipment (bicycle, surfboard, snowboard, ski equipment, …), at least 48 hours before departure. The Allegiant Air helpline will help you with all formalities.
Extra baggage in the hold of Allegiant Air: What is the price to pay
Knowing that the maximum weight of checked baggage is 40 pounds (18 kilograms), the excess baggage charges applied by this low-cost airline in the event of excess are as follows:
$50 for all baggage with an additional weight of 30 pounds (32kg).
$75 for each additional 60 pounds (45 kg).
Remember that the weight and dimensions will be meticulously checked by airport staff, so prepare a suitcase in advance that will meet the required standards. Also check the checked baggage rates to avoid unpleasant surprises at check-in.
How to buy excess baggage online?
Buying excess baggage online is a great way to save time and money on your next trip. Imagine that the extra baggage prices displayed on the Allegiant Air website are half the price of the airport.
Purchasing excess baggage: Online or at the airport?
From the Allegiant Air website or mobile app, log into the Manage My Trip page to view your booking and make any necessary changes (Adding Extras).
How do you purchase additional baggage for your flight?
Once on the Manage my trip page, select the “Add extras” option. This will take you to a page that gives you the option to add excess baggage. Select the number of pieces or kilograms (pounds) you wish to purchase and click “Continue”.
You will then be taken to a page that displays all charges associated with your excess baggage purchase. Check this information and click “Continue” again if everything looks correct.
The last step is to pay for your purchase. To do this, enter your payment information and click “Buy Now” to complete your purchase. Once your payment has been processed, you will receive a confirmation email with all of your updated booking information.
What happens if your baggage exceeds the weight or dimensions allowed in your allowance?
If your baggage exceeds the weight limit set by your airline, you will have to pay an excess baggage charge. Otherwise, your carrier reserves the right to refuse your boarding with your luggage.
These charges are based on the difference between the weight of your checked baggage and the permitted weight limit.
That’s why it’s important to check your baggage before arriving at the airport or buy additional baggage allowance in advance or upgrade to a higher fare class that includes a higher weight allowance.
If you are unable to pay for excess baggage at the airport, your baggage may not be accepted and you will either have to leave it there or arrange for it to be shipped separately.
